BWYC's Junior Sailing Program exists to support sailing opportunities and education for youth sailors of every age and level of expertise. We are dedicated to providing an environment where young sailors can refine their racing skills and boat handling, enjoy meeting new friends, and participate in fun events on and off the water. Our youth program offers instruction on basic and advanced boat handling, tactics, racing technique, sail tuning, and more. We offer sailing instruction workshops all year long.

Our summer sailing program targets children ages 6-17. We offer club owned Optimists, 420s, Sunfish, and Flying Scots. Most of our instruction is provided on Optimists and 420s.

      Programs Offered

Harbor Mice Optimist - Beginner Learn-to-Sail | 7-12 year olds

Optimist Harbor Mice is tailored for our new sailors to learn how to sail an optimist dingy. Optimists are the most popular youth sailing class worldwide, and an entry point into a lifetime of sailing. We initially have two sailors on each boat and as children's skills improve, sailors will learn to maneuver thier own boats. The Harbor Mice Program offers lots of fun games and activities and ample, close coaching supervision to ensure water safety for our youngest sailors.

      Green Fleet Optimist - Beginner/Intermediate Learn-to-race | 9-13 year olds

Optimist Green Fleet program focuses on developing better boat handling skills, racing tactics, and speed techniques. Sailors that develop these skills will fine tune them by travelling to local area events. Sailors are encouraged to attend major events as part of BWYC's youth racing team under the supervision of our Sailing Director and parent volunteers.

Sunfish and 420 Classes - Learn to Sail intermediate | 8-14 yr olds | 1-3 sailors per boat

This program is designed for sailors who want to have fun and learn the basic sailing skills. We typically pair 2-3 intermediate sailors on each boat initially supervised by coaching staff.

Flying Scot - Learn to Sail | 7-14 yr olds | 3-5 kids in a boat with an instructor

The Flying Scot program is geared to sailors who wish to learn on a larger day sailor with plenty of room for friends. The Flying Scot program allows 3-5 sailors with an instructor on board.

Club 420 - Intermediate/Advanced - Learn to Sail and Race | 2 sailors per boat | 8-17 year olds (some previous sailing experience required)

This training focuses on fundamentals of boat handling skills, racing and performance techniques, as well as fun and sportsmanship.
